Games of the Year: XCOM: Enemy Unknown

I should be more brave, but they are here and they know who I am. But it is time to come out. It is time to let the world know what great calamity fate or chance or God hath wrought upon our global village. For the last few months, I have been on a secret mission to protect our planet, livelihood, and existence from aliens. Yes, aliens. The sort that haunt you in your dreams as you try to recover long enough in bed to muster the strength to go on a little longer, to make another mission work.

Only you can never rest. Earth needs you always, and with my unique position at XCOM, I am always needed to make decisions. “What do we do next?” is probably the most accurate description, but feels like a complete understatement. The fate of the world rests on my ability to be an economist of war. And I am failing.

The lives I’ve lost … the many, many lives I’ve lost … men and women I knew from childhood, random strangers I had become attached to, and innocent civilians that were counting on me: all sent to oblivion. One can only survive so long before unknown threats show themselves in the heat of a routine mission, only to sever your most trusted veterans from their attachment to the material plane. As the body count mounts, my heart sinks into an ocean of despair and loss.

But the human spirit is strong, dare I say invincible. No odds are unfavorable if you are playing the game for noble reasons. And what can be more noble than protecting friends, family, and home? What is a greater cause than survival of the species?

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a turn-based strategy game from Firaxis Games. In it, you are tasked with running XCOM, a special taskforce put together by all the governments of Earth intended to investigate and protect us from an alien invasion. The game is deep, impactful, and easily replayable. But it is hard. You will lose your soldiers, no matter what you do. Hours of training them to be the best at sniping or the best at flushing out targets or the best at providing some frontline support will be lost.

But you won’t regret it because the game is incredible fun. XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a must own and one of my few Games of the Year. Buy it today on Steam for 25% off!
